For those not in South-east Queensland, this message will be of little
interest.
I am helping to arrange a cruise (with an environmental bias) on the
Pumicestone Passage on Saturday, 29th January, and am calling for people to
let me know if they are interested. "The Ferryman" can take a maximum of 55
passengers.
The boat departs Sylvan Beach at 10 am, returning at approx. 3pm. Sylvan
Beach is on Bribie Island, next to the bridge linking Bribie with the
mainland. The cost is $27 per person, and includes a tucker box lunch of
mixed sandwiches, fruit platter, cake, tea and coffee. Soft drinks can be
bought on board, or BYO.
The cruise will include commentary about the historical and environmental
aspects of the area. The tide will be low about an hour after departure,
giving extensive views of intertidal feeding banks, where many species of
shorebirds occur. On the return trip, there should be good views of birds
moving from feeding sites to roosts on a rising tide.
The Pumicestone Passage is a narrow, shallow, mangrove-lined channel,
important as fish breeding and nursery habitat, as well as a shorebird
habitat. It is also really beautiful.
We want it to stay beautiful. This cruise is to raise money for the
Wetlands Association's court case against a company which has sought
approval to mine - to dig the biggest, deepest hole (50Ha x 18m deep) ever
dug - on the floodplain beside the Passage. The application has been
refused by Caboolture Council, and the company has appealed. The Wetlands
Association is a co-respondent with Council, and needs to raise money for
this fight.

Whilst I am not a member of the Wetlands Association myself, I support this
venture. Rob King, who does QWSG monthly wader roost counts with me, is
deeply involved in the case, and is not internet connected. His phone

birding-aus. Please be assured that the funds raised will go only to fight
this court case. In fact, now that I think about it, I guess if you can't
make the cruise, but want to make a donation, that would be wonderful. Rob
has put heart and soul into this cause, including a great deal of his own
money.
