Dear all,

Re: 'Let's send thanks to Peter Beattie for trying to end the
Queensland bush clearances which were sending Australia to the
top of the 1999 international dirty environmental league.

And boo to Robert Hill for saying it's nothing to him.'
from Michael Norris

Premier Beattie probably deserves thanks but actual outcome of new Qld
legislation on clearing still not clear so strong congratulations may be a
bit premature. The devil as usual is in the details and not in the
government press releases. What is certain is that massive broadscale
clearing will not be stopped. Early analysis suggests that farmers in some
regions are still likely to clear over 100,000 ha a year (1 million plus
birds) annually, in Qld.

I'll send out a more detailed assessment of the likely short and long term
outcomes to birding aus after the legislation goes through the Qld
Parliament, probably today.

And Michael Norris is probably right about Robert- he hasn't covered
himself with glory on this one- but will hopefully redeem himself.

cheers,

Barry Traill
