I was fortunate enough to observe a male Nankeen Kestrel today between
1-5pm, at Hawkstowe Park, Sth Morang, Victoria. It gave great displays
of hovering, gliding, swooping and diving, obviously for insects as i
did not see it with rodent prey. The area is mainly flat with two small
lakes surrounded by tall dry grass and freshly cut grass, and flanked
around 300 degrees by banked shrubland and scattered eucalypts. It was
also interesting to see it being attacked and chased off at times by
brave Dusky Woodswallows!, obviously protecting young.
