Highlights from twice-weekly Canberra Ornithologists' Group (COG) hotline,
for period ending 30 November (some reports are of earlier obs).
You will probably have seen the separate posting on the Red Knot, the first
ever ACT record. It appeared to stay for only a day.
BUFF-BANDED RAILS 3/11 pair mating, suburban Jerrabomberra wetlands;
again on 24/11 [different pair? unsuccessful first time? recreation???]
SPOTTED CRAKE 7/11 Jerrabomberra
RED KNOT 7/11 Jerrabomberra
YELLOW-TAILED BLACK-COCKIES 6/11 over inner suburban Chapman
KOEL 9/11 male in suburban Waramanga [1st for the year; regular
subsequent reports]
HOBBY TAKING STARLING IN MID-AIR observed out of an office window,
which seems to be a not irregular event in Canberra...
GLOSSY BLACK-COCKIES 13/11 4 on inner suburban Mt Ainslie
BLACK KITE 13/11 suburban Fadden [most uncommon for ACT, let alone suburbs]
RUFOUS FANTAIL 11/11 inner suburban Ainslie [passage migrant, 1st record
for the year; this is the latest record of the past 9 years, except for 1993
when it wasn't recorded until January!]
WHITE-BROWED WOODSWALLOW 20/11 20+ over suburban Ngunawal [1st for
the season; they don't turn up every year]
BAR-SHOULDERED DOVES 28/11 heard calling Callum Brae woodlands, near
inner Canberra [if confirmed - and seems sound - would only be second record
for ACT]
SPINE-TAILED SWIFTS 26/11 50+ at Ulladulla [on coast just to north of
here; none in Canberra yet]
