We spent the weekend in the Newcastle area.
Nothing uncommon to report but a couple of things that may be of
interest:

There was a little colony of NANKEEN NIGHT HERONS roosting in the
mangroves on the north side of the east end of Stockton Bridge. Are
they perhaps regular there? A fishing-boat went into the bay closest to
the shore and frightened them up. Ten birds went up and moved away to
the north. There is another small colony of them at the Egret Swamp in
Shortlands. They were roosting in the paperbarks close to the tower,
where there were no egret nests (to avoid being bombed?).

There were also half a dozen MARSH SANDPIPERS feeding among hundreds of
Stilts on the large pond on Kooragang opposite the wind-generator. Does
one really get arrested for trudging down that road on the west side of
the pond with telescope on shoulder, to get a closer look? There were
numbers of smaller waders at the Northern end, too far off to identify.
