Highlights of lists from members of the Blue Mountains Bird Observers for
OCTOBER 99.
-----------------------------------

RAPTORS - October was a poor month for raptors and apart from a grey morph
GREY GOSHAWK reported just outside our area boundary at Bilpin there were
no Accipiters reported at all, which is unusual. Only three diurnal raptor
species were reported in the area: PACIFIC BAZA at Sun Valley (a regular
location for this species), PEREGRINE FALCON and NANKEEN KESTREL.

LEWIN'S RAIL - A regular in the swamp at Catalina Park, Katoomba, it was
again heard on the 10th.

WHITE-HEADED PIGEON - Upper mountains record: a pair at Blackheath on the
12th and a lone immature on the 24th.

BROWN CUCKOO-DOVE - Heard at Katoomba on the 9th; also reported Fairy Bower
area, Mt Victoria. (More common in the lower and mid mountains.)

GLOSSY BLACK-COCKATOO - At Lapstone on several days early in the month; 3
at Kings Tableland on 25th.

YELLOW-TAILED BLACK-COCKATOOS - Fewer sightings and in smaller groups than
over the previous few months. The largest flock was c.12 at Hazelbrook.

HORSFIELD'S BRONZE-CUCKOO - Reported at Blackheath on the 1st and then
occasionally throughout the month. Also 1+ in the heathland at Kings
Tableland on 28/10. Normally fairly rare in the Blue Mountains.

COMMON KOEL - The only upper mountains report for October was at Blackheath
(no date supplied). Didn't arrive at Katoomba until 25th November. Seemed
to be late arriving in most places.

CHANNEL-BILLED CUCKOO - Many reports, with observers at Springwood
commenting they were "in greater numbers than previously noticed".

POWERFUL OWL - Mount Riverview.

DOLLARBIRD - First arrival at Valley Heights on 2nd; at Winmalee and
Faulconbridge on 10th.

WHITE-THROATED NEEDLETAILS - None reported in our area as yet.

JACKY WINTER - A single bird at the beginning of the month at Blackheath.

LEADEN FLYCATCHER - First arrival at Hazelbrook on 5th; at Faulconbridge on
18th.

SATIN FLYCATCHER - One male on Oaks Fire Trail near Woodford on 27th. A
flycatcher heard on the 15th at Katoomba was probably a Satin and if so,
would have been the first arrival in our area.

CICADABIRD - First recorded on 20th at Claires Glen, north of Bullaburra.
Present at Winmalee on 23rd, arrived Hazelbrook 28th and Mt Riverview on
29th.

WHITE-BROWED WOODSWALLOW - Reported at Winmalee on 26th (no number of birds
given).
