Hi all,
I received this message from the Blue Mountains Conservation Society and
thought it relevant and important enough to forward to this list. I was
interested to read of the presence of Emus in this woodland - is this the
only place in the Sydney region where wild Emus can still be found?

>>URGENT ACTION NEEDED
>>Please circulate to as many people as possible.
>>
>>The next two weeks will be critical for the protection of the St Marys
>>Woodlands on land formerly owned by ADI. The NSW Minister for Urban
>>Affairs & Planning is shortly to decide on the release of a Draft
>>Regional Environmental Plan for the woodlands.
>>
>>The woodlands are one of the largest remaining stands of Cumberland
>>Plain Woodland, a vegetation type which has been recognised in State and
>>Federal legislation as being endangered. The woodlands are the only
>>remaining location in western Sydney where the original native grazing
>>animals (kangaroos & emus) can be seen in their original habitat. The
>>trees in the woodland are magnificent examples of the woodland which
>>previously covered the shale soils of western Sydney.
>>
>>The woodlands have been recognised as being of national significance
>>through listing on the Register of the National Estate. Senator Hill of
>>the Federal Liberal Government has recognised the importance of these
>>woodlands, but actions by the NSW Labor Government may place the area at
>>risk of massive urban development.
>>
>>Your action can help protect these woodlands for the people of western
>>Sydney and future generations.
>>
>>Write to the Premier, Bob Carr & the Minister for Urban Affairs &
>>Planning, Andrew Refshauge, urging that they impose a moratorium on
>>release of the Regional Environmental Plan until comprehensive
>>biodiversity surveys of the St Marys Woodlands have been completed, the
>>Recovery Plan for Cumberland Plain Woodland is finalised and the area
>>has been fully assessed for its value to the people of western Sydney as
>>a conservation and recreation reserve.
