We've all witnessed bird behaviour and trends we find interesting, but how
do you gauge their significance and noteworthiness, particularly from a
conservation perspective? Our reticence about behavioural observations,
etc, stems largely from ignorance about what's worth reporting and to whom.
I can't see much changing either until there's some sort of checklist of
knowledge gaps/key information sought/contacts, which your average birder
can refer to. If there was such a list then bird clubs could distribute
them, or they cound be an appendix to field guides, and some of the more
critical issues could be being addressed right now during the Atlas scheme.
It may even inspire a whole new breed of birder - the KGB (Knowledge Gap
Here's some current gaps in my own local knowledge, spurred mainly by dips
on the QOSI Twitchathon on the weekend!
Are there any Shovellers around SE Qld at the moment? If not, where have
they all gone and why?
What's so different about the needs of the Hoary-headed Grebe, which are

The female Green Pygmy-Goose near Lake Clarendon (via Gatton, SE Qld) seems
to be bonded to a male Cotton Pygmy-Goose. Is this a common association
elsewhere, or just the result of being the only GPG for miles?
How loyal are White-backed Swallows to a site, and what time do they go to
roost? (Apparently before 5.45 pm around this time of year!)
Do Terek Sandpipers depart roosts before the larger species, or are there
none around Moreton Bay at present?
What's a good brand of tripod for a reasonable price?
