Thanks for the comment re GCGrebes.
The bird I saw was definitely not in breeding plumage and I did a double
take at first, wondering what it was. I had to sneak around some willows to
get another, closer look at it to be really sure. The crest may have just
been forming and it almost looked like it had two little horns on its head.
Really odd.
And just to add to the many comments about the scarcity of this species, I
checked my database AFTER posting to Birding-Aus. This was my first sighting
of the species in Sth Aust.
