Bribie Island is another sandy island in Moreton Bay, albeit much closer to
the mainland (linked with a bridge nowadays) than North Stradbroke. During
the past couple of years I've been birding on Bribie pretty regularly and
have observed over 230 species - this total does not include a great number
of seabirds as Moreton Island is inconsiderately placed between Bribie and
the deep beyond.
Neither does the total include about twenty species that, for some reason,
I've managed not to see. So 250 for Straddie sounds quite reasonable.
However, the local press always seem to get hold of such a number and then
convey the impression that if a reader pitches up for an afternoon's bird
spotting, that's the kind of total they would end up with.
In an excellent publication on the birds of Bribie Island and surrounds
(which extends the area covered to include the adjacent mainland) about 350
species of bird were identified - but this includes many rarities and casual
visitors from further inland. However, some bright spark compared this with
the number available in Kakadu. Tell someone round here that you're
interested in birds and you'll invariably get the response "there are more
birds on Bribie than in Kakadu, you know!"
There certainly won't be once the developers have finished carving up the
island!!
Cheers - Trevor.
