Wildflowers in profusion! The bush is so full of colour and scents with
boronia, flannel flowers, native peas, kunzea, dampiera, vanilla lilies,
etc, all vying for their respective insect pollinators? attention, and the
waratahs are shouting in bright red all through the forest!
As you might have guessed I?ve been out walking today. One of the places I
went was Claire?s Glen, north of Bullaburra, a short walk into a rainforest
gully on a slightly overgrown and rough track. Birds were everywhere,
including RUFOUS FANTAILS, BLACK-FACED MONARCHS and a CICADABIRD, back from
their travels. Also in full voice were SHINING BRONZE-CUCKOO, PILOTBIRD,
BROWN GERYGONE, LEWIN?S HONEYEATER, GOLDEN WHISTLER, and a SPOTTED
QUAIL-THRUSH on the hillside, among others.
Later I saw two SOUTHERN EMU-WRENS at a swamp north of Lawson. A drive to
McMahon?s Lookout overlooking Lake Burragorang revealed lots of NOISY
FRIARBIRDS in the flowering mistletoe, BRUSH CUCKOO and SUPERB LYREBIRDS
calling below the lookout, and another one of those pesky Satin/Leaden
FLYCATCHERS. All the usual common birds were there too. The tall Blue Gums
were looking magnificent and everything is fresh and green. Driving back I
was thinking ?this would be a likely spot to see Brush Bronzewings? and just
then I rounded a bend and there in the middle of the road was a BRUSH
BRONZEWING! (After that I tried to conjure up all sorts of rarities, but
with no luck.)
Yes it was a good day, an indication of what seems to be turning into a very
good season after all the recent rain.
