That's amazing! I too went to Cloudy Bay on the 16th and I too saw my
first Oriental Plover, much to my amazement. I double and triple-checked
my notes, but it had to be. I was wondering how I be able to convince
anyone, as I didn't have a camera. It was on the carpark side of the
stream and maybe 50m in from the shoreline, just as you described! That's
got to be quite a coincidence. It's nice to know some people with more
knowledge about waders than I also saw it.
It was running around on the sandy beach among patches of seaweed and
driftwood with some stints and Red-capped Plovers. It gave a short, sharp
call which first got my attention.
I was probably there later than you guys, I got there at about 5.30 pm, and
was just hoping to see some golden plovers and hooded plovers!
Sadly, it was a lovely sunny day on Sunday, and I of course dragged my
partner back to Cloudy Bay, which was of course crowded with people.
Worse, a family, complete with 4wd, bicycles and dog, had set up near where
the plover had been, and preceeded to start a fire on the beach!
We walked the length of the bay but the plover was nowhere to be seen.
Later in the afternoon we returned after the family had left, and Hooded
Plovers and stints were there but no Oriental Plover. Let's hope it found
a quieter spot!
