Gooday Michael and all,
You asked for any success stories in respect to retention of natural growth
and I assume that would also mean revegetation of areas.
QR (Queensland Rail) Environmental section has successfully planted the
transport corridors with trees alongside the Main North Coast Rail Line on
the entrance to Townsville. This has been carried out in an endeavour to
reduce associated noise from the rail operations with the trees acting as a
buffer. The trees are well established now but undergrowth is limited.
When this project was first started I recall one of my driving colleagues
stating as we passed by " QR will pay the price for planting those trees I
can see many a women dragged over there and raped" ? Strange how some people
think.
Another success story is the southern entrance to Ingham, this was a joint
project between the Hichinbrook Shire Council and the Government. The
vegetation is thick with undergrowth well extablished. Unable to give
details about birdlife and whether numbers have improved since the start of
both projects.
