Dr Geoff Barrett, National Project Manager of Birds Australia's Second
Atlas of Australian Birds, will present its RESULTS TO DATE in Brisbane at
1.00 pm on Thursday 21 October 1999.

This community-based, four-year Second Atlas started in August 1998, with
support from EPA/QPWS. One of its main aims is to monitor changes in bird
distribution since the first Atlas twenty years ago. One year in,
Atlassers have recorded 712 of Australia's bird species in over 30,000
surveys in more than 1,800 locations; totalling 550,000 bird sightings.

Geoff will outline the four-year Atlas project, and its methodology. He
will report on coverage in Queensland to date. He will then concentrate on
presenting interesting results from its first year, for Australia and
especially for Queensland. He will explain the linkages with other bird
surveys, including WildNet and NatureSearch.. There will be an opportunity
for questions, and to become an Atlasser.

His presentation is on Thursday 21 October 1999 from 1.00 - 2.00 pm, in the
15th floor conference room of the EPA/QPWS Building, at 160 Ann St,
Brisbane. ALL ARE WELCOME, no charge.

For more information, contact Pete Nichols, Queensland facilitator for the
Atlas, on Wednesdays: Floor 8, Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service, 160
Ann St, Brisbane, 4000. Telephone 07 3227.6230, fax 07 3227.6386; and
