Rufous
Scrub-bird Survey Volunteers - we need your help!
Why a
survey? Observations indicate that the Rufous Scrub-bird's range has
contracted, that bird numbers have declined within their current range, and
that the RSB has become locally extinct in some areas, e.g. The Big
Scrub. Further monitoring and evidence is urgently required as a
prelude to effective conservation management.
Survey location? The
beautiful World Heritage Central Eastern Australian
Rainforest Reserves. Survey will concentrate on 5 main areas:
Barrington Tops, Gibraltar Ranges/Washpool, Mt Killiekrankie and Border
Ranges National Parks.
When? The main survey is
from October to December. Major survey effort will occur early
October.
Who? We require experienced birdwatchers as well as the less
experienced. It is proposed that for each of the five main locations, there
will be 8 people (4 teams of 2), with those with less experience will
be paired with the more experienced.
NOTE: VOLUNTEERS ARE STILL REQUIRED FOR THE
GIBRALTAR RANGES/WASHPOOL, BARRINGTON TOPS AND MT KILLEKRANKIE
SURVEYS.
Training? Training will be provided to familiarise volunteers
with the project, the survey method and bird calls and behaviour.
Accommodation? Depending on the survey site, but ranging from camping
in NPs to caravan parks and service cabins.
Costs? Petrol and some
accommodation costs will be met by the NPWS.
