Ok Terry, you do it your way, I'll do it mine. 
I don't think I'm necessarily saying 4WD is so essential, it's got more to
do with how the vehicle is built, and many street cars are just not
intended to be put on the types of terrain encountered in the outback. 
Of course people used to use street cars when that was all there was
available, but surely it's the very degree of problems experienced with
them which led to the development of more heavily built vehicles - why else
would manufacturers have invested the billions they have into them.
