Hi birders,
The Swift Parrot/Regent Honeyeater survey was on the weekend of 7-8 August
in south-eastern Australia.
I have received a number of forms and reports from observers already,
thanks for the prompt replies! I haven't got a single record of a swifty
from NSW for the weekend yet! I know there have been some swifties on the
western slopes of NSW during the last month.
Has anyone seen any in NSW recently?
About 260 Swift Parrots have been accounted for Victoria. I saw about 200
during about 8 days touring the Victorian box-ironbark country. The Swift
Parrot story for Victoria is that Yellow Gum or SA Blue Gum (Eucalyptus
leucoxylon) is the main feed species (last year it was Red Ironbark
E.tricarpa). The birds have returned to many of their traditional
Victorian haunts after being absent in the May survey. There doesn't seem
to be as many in the Mugga Ironbark habitats of NE Vic/W NSW as there was
in late autumn/early winter.
I saw 55 species of birds in Jallukar State Forest near Moyston (Western
Victoria) on Tuesday. A woodland bird bonanza! Two pairs of Hooded
Robins, a party of Southern Whiteface, a Speckled Warbler, a Black-eared
Cuckoo, a Chestnut-rumped Hylacola, and eight Swift Parrots (they have been
there since April). Barking Owl and Diamond Firetails have also been
recorded here. A very important 1100 hectare block for these species.
