Another request for details of a woodland bird species in se Australia
                          - Gilbert's Whistler -

I am interested in list members opinions on evidence and possible reasons
of decline in breeding and sight records for Gilbert's Whistler in south
east Australia, particularly Victoria. I am making an assessment of the
conservation and breeding status of this taxon and threats affecting its
long term conservation in the state. The Atlas data suggests that
Gilbert's Whistlers have in fact become extinct in some Victorian
localities. Any records of such occurrences are keenly sought.

I invite observers to contact me directly with any observations of these
species which have NOT already been forwarded to the Atlas of Victorian
Wildlife or the new Atlas of Australian Birds. If you have noted the
species in the past and found it now absent or noticably declined from the
same locality I am keen to hear from you (dates, locality and numbers if
possible).

If you have any older relatives who lived in rural Victoria and may
remember the bird when they were children, please ask them what they
remember and whether the species is now gone from where they saw it. The
information is to be used to assess the population size and whether the
species has declined in se Australia.

All advice greatfully received and pers. comms. acknowledged.
