Yippee! A young Pacific Baza hanging around the general vicinity of my
house today, making dreadful noises. First record of a baza on my
backyard-and-immediate-environs list.
I'd not heard a baza's call before. Pizzey describes the flight call as
"a mellow double whistle, wee-choo, wee-choo". To me, it sounded more like
a very loud, grating "SKREE-chuck, SKREE-chuck". It was the call which
first alerted me to a newcomer in the neighbourhood.
Anyway, it hung around for most of the day, giving the occasional
demonstration of in-flight aerobatics. Since I live in an inner suburb,
just over the hill from the CBD, I was particularly chuffed to see such an
entertaining visitor. (This brings my backyard-and-environs list to 86).
