Central Coast District Staff of the NSW National Parks and Wildlife
Service, would deal with several hundred calls about Magpie attacks
during the period August-November each year. In the worse cases, only a
few per year, following repeated attacks by the birds to peoples faces,
eyes and heads, we have had to arrange for the offending bird to be put
down. At the peak of the attack season, the equivalent of the time of
one ranger per day is allocated to dealing with the problem in the
Gosford and Wyong local government areas. This is in addition to all the
work put in by members of volunteer wildlife carer groups who also
assist in alleviating the problems, putting out signs, talking to
neighbours etc. For wildlife managers there is also the threat of public
liability negligent claims. The problem is a lot more complex than some
members of birding-aus like to think judging my members comments.
