On Sunday 20th June, Crab Creek was the venue for the regular mist - netting
which is carried out by the Broome Bird Observatory as part of their normal
research schedule . A total of seven nets were set in the mangroves by BBO
Assistant Warden Adrian and Friends of BBO volunteers . A Bar - shouldered
Dove was the first bird in at 6.30am and was followed by another 26 birds
from nine different species, before the nets were closed at 11am. The 27
birds netted were each banded (except for retraps), weighed, measured,
sexed, (where possible) and had their brood patches checked before being
released. There were 7 retraps, none of which were same day, included in
this total.
Other species processed included:-
White - breasted Whistler 4 - including 2 retraps. One of which was a
handsome male.
Yellow White - eye 6 - two of these being retraps
Sacred Kingfisher 2 - one being a retrap
Brown Honeyeater 3
Mangrove Grey Fantail 2
Broadbilled Flycatcher 2
Dusky Gerygone 5 - two of these were retraps
Mistletoe Birds - There were two of these, both males, one being unusual in
that its upper tail coverts
and also its crown had patches of rufous.
In between banding activity the group enjoyed good views of the following
birds flying overhead:-
Black -shouldered Kite
Whistling Kite
Swamp Harrier
Black Kite
White Bellied Sea Eagle (Imm.)
Brown Goshawk
Whimbrel
Sacred Ibis
White - faced Heron
Little Egret
White - breasted Woodswallows and Tree Martins were seen hawking for
insects, a Pied Butcherbird was seen and heard, also Zebra Finch were
conspicuous and Mrs Mac supplied the cake as usual.
A very enjoyable morning was had by all.
