There have been lots of virus hoaxes and even some real viruses out there
lately. Do your hard drive a favour and try the following advice
(thanks to Michael Norris, John Gamblin & others):
DO NOT OPEN any email attachments unless you are 100% sure of their
source. Be ESPECIALLY CAREFUL of messages that sound like this
EVEN IF it seems to come from someone you know:
"I received your email and I shall send you a reply ASAP.
Till then, take a look at the attached zipped docs.".
The attachment could be zipped_files.exe which is the "ExploreZip" virus
you may have heard about in the media in recent days. Some sources call
it a "Worm" virus, which is something a little different, but nasty by any
name. Happy99 and Melissa are two other viruses being sent round through
attachments.
It is also good policy to run anti-virus software and update it regularly.
Your ISP or workplace SHOULD provide free updates.
Attachments are discouraged on birding-aus - PLEASE DON'T USE THEM!
Remember - the simplest, safest policy is to NEVER open (or click)
attachments. You should also have your mail reader set up so that
attachments are NEVER opened on arrival/download.
