Actually, one of the biggest mistakes novices might make is to pay too
much attention to the distribution maps in the field guides.  In a
recent trip through the back blocks I came across species that according
to the latest Pizzy and Knight were hundreds of kilometres out of their
supposed range.  

How many times have people looked at maps for virtually identical
species and said, 'well that one doesn't occur here, so it must be this
one'?
