Just a short note to give an update on the situation.
Jon Gibbons the Chief Environmental Health Officer with the Bowen Shire
Council advised that the dump had been covered that day following the deaths
and sickness of the birds being reported, with staff to monitor the
situation.
No count as to how many birds were killed or affected.
Contact was made with the Townsville Office of the Department of Environment
and Heritage, who did not seem too interested (Jon Gibbons comment).
No specimens were taken for testing so as to assist in identifying the
cause.
The concern I would like to express is the lack of a set down procedure on
the part of the Department of Environment and Heritage.
It would seem only reasonable that the Dept. would request specimens
to investigate the matter and try and determine a cause. How many reports do
they receive of this nature and are they followed through and investigated
to our satisfaction?
