Hello everyone,
This summer is the first summer that we have not witnessed a
Great-billed heron's nest in the previous five summers. The nest last year
was very hard to see. Since I have been back at work there has been good
evidence of a nest by observing adult birds that had obviously been feeding
a chick and I was hoping that soon we would start seeing a juvenile bird at
ground level. The adult birds and the juvenile then rendezvous for months
afterwards for the juvenile to be fed resulting in regular sightings during
the winter and spring. The juvenile simply stands out in the winter sun like
a garden gnome waiting to be fed. Adult birds can be seen at this time, from
the Daintree Village jetty, around dawn on their way to feed the chick.
The good news is that we have a juvenile Great-billed Heron out of
the nest at ground level.

Cheers
Chris
