To all those who took the time to make suggestions about benefits of neck-swaying of the White-faced Heron, I offer my thanks. I normally respond to individuals, but am pushed by lack of time, and was truly overwhelmed by the number of responses. Most replies favoured the theory that the birds do this to guage the depth of field. I'm cross at myself for not considering this, because I am well familiar with that feature in other mammals.
