PORTLAND PELAGIC TRIP REPORT APRIL 11TH 1999
Group:  Mike Carter (Leader), Maarten Heelzebosch, John Long; Rod Bird and
Diana Lewis (Hamilton), Grant Penrhyn (SA), Gavin O'Meara, Judith Hoyle,
John Saw, Graham Winstone and Janette Jones (Albury).  No one sick!
Vessel:Michael J IV. Skipper: Howard Willoughby. Owner/Decky: Gary Roberts
Weather: Fine, calm, cloudless, warm. Southerly breeze to 10 knots from
1215.  Distant fog. Sea: Glassy on zero swell in a.m.. Rippled in p.m.
Activity: Sailed @ 0655. Docked 1545.  Past east of Lawrence Rocks (LR) @
0720 then headed out SW (225o) @12 knots.  0800 - 0830 watched Blue Whale
feeding (photos) @ 3.75 NM S of Cape Nelson.  Another two observed  about
3NM further.  
Paused @ 0910 to check out Great Shearwater  and White-faced Storm Petrels.
 Crossed shelf at 1010 and headed for trawler - stopped to berley (sharks
liver).
1115 moved to intercept second trawler.  Headed in 1300.  At LT 1515 - 1525.

Blue Whales                     3 (photos 1)
Fur Seals                       c 12 all zones including pelagic 
BIRDS:                  23 sea birds, plus 3 others on LR.  Mostly pelagic
Little Penguin          13
Wandering Albatross     1 stage I (juv). Pelagic (photos)
Black-browed Albatross  500 (400). 300 Impavada (photos) congregating at
trawlers.
Buller's Albatross              5 1 ad.. Pelagic (photos)
Yellow-nosed Albatross  20 (10)
Shy Albatros                    100 (50)
Salvin's Albatross              1 sub ad.. Pelagic (photos)
Great-winged Petrel             5 (3).  All nominate race, all pelagic
White-chinned Petrel    1 pelagic (photos flight)
Flesh-footed Shearwater 2 (2).  Pelagic
Great Shearwater                1 offshore.  Ist Victorian record, 3rd or
4th Australian
record.

Short-tailed Shearwater 26 (20).  2 inshore, 20 offshore, 2 pelagic
Fluttering Shearwater   16 (6).  All inshore
Wilson's Storm-Petrel   80 (60).  1 offshore, 79 pelagic
Grey-backed Storm-Petrel        1.  Pelagic
White-faced Storm-Petrel        6. 4 off shore (2 sitting on sea), 2 pelagic
Australasian Gannet             c8000 on and around LR, 40 inshore
Black-faced Cormorant   22 on LR, others in bay and harbour
Artic Jaeger                    1 [2nd] summer, dark morph., pelagic.
