My mother lives in Camberwell, Melbourne. One day last week she saw a Spotted Dove drop something from its beak in flight, which landed on the lawn. It was a piece of whitish eggshell. Two days before she had found a larger piece of eggshell of the same type, in almost the same place. I would take this as pretty conclusive evidence that the Doves are definitely nesting nearby. Admittedly it's late but they eat a lot of broken acorns from street and garden trees, available at present. My mother also gives them bread, but they haven't been visiting her for a couple of weeks. I haven't heard any more Fantail Cuckoos since my last post. Black Ducks have been doing a lot of courting on the Billabong at Wilson Reserve, Ivanhoe.
