A short report on a pleasant afternoon spent atlassing in the hills near
Melbourne.

On the way out of town, I observed 2 Swift Parrots in the Melbourne
suburb of Yallambie (corner of Yallambie Road and Lower Plenty Road;
Melways ref: 20 J9).

The main event was to wander around the Mount Tanglefoot area of the
Toolangi State Forest. Mount Tanglefoot is about 60km and 046º (or near
enough to Northeast) from the Melbourne GPO. That's about 75-80 km of
driving, and takes about 80-90 minutes. It was very cool and crisp
between 600-800m (probably just less than 10ºC), and after a few showers
in the morning the afternoon was clear and sunny. Great southern Autumn
weather!!

Once there I visited three locations:

   * (a) Wirrawilla Rainforest Walk (37º32'05"S  145º31'31"E).  A cool
     temperate rainforest gully of Myrtle Beech and Sassafras,
     surrounded by regrowth Mountain Ash, and at about 610m altitude.
   * (b) Corner of Blowhard Road and Sylvia Creek Road (37º30'26"S
     145º31'31"E). An area of mixed peppermint/ash wet sclerophyll
     forest and recent logging coupes. About 740m altitude.
   * (c) Tanglefoot carpark (37º30'44"S  145º32'03"E).  An area of
     Mountain Ash regrowth wet sclerophyll forest. About 800m altitude.

Interesting birds (from a modest list of 26) included single Wonga
Pigeons calling at (a) and (b); Lewin's Honeyeaters; Pilotbird;
Large-billed Scrubwren. All of these are approaching the western extent
of their usual range at this point. The Olive Whistler at (a) was very
confiding; lyrebirds were calling throughout the area. The Flame Robins
at (b) included 2 coloured males and a female, and were foraging for
insects with sally-strike/snatch manoeuvres on small shrubs, mounted
from both the ground and low perches.

A full list follows below.

Cheers, Lawrie
