Gosh I do get so excited when the southern migrants return with the first
sign of winter. I was just drifting through the Sunday morning routine when
I heard that high squeaking gate call of the Grey Fantail, and rushed
outside with excitement. "You're back! Welcome!," I called to the fantail,
and rushed inside to find husband James and drag him outside to share this
annual joy. I make no apology for the excited response I feel; rather I
feel fortunate to be able to gain so much enjoyment from these small things.

Today, being April 11, is a year to the day since the fantail arrived for
1998. Last year the fantail stayed for 21 weeks. In 1997 it arrived on
April 14, and stayed 18 weeks.

Two juvenile Golden Whistlers turned up in the garden a couple of days ago.
This also follows the seasonal pattern of previous years.

Today a Yellow-faced Honeyeater (YFHE) also turned up in the garden. The
YFHE is a rare sighting for our garden, and only during migration.

Not a migrant, but.....on December 26, 1998, a young Eastern Whipbird took
up residence in our garden. This had not occurred before. A little later I
became aware that there were two young birds. Their plumage has developed
towards adult plumage, and still they remain here. I am not assuming that
they will stay during the coming dry season, but will watch with interest.

Regards,

jill
