Hi everyone,
had a few hours birdwatching on Monday. I was on Phillip Is. (Vic in Western
Port Bay) and walked out to a high tide wader roost
called Observation Point. A few things which may be of interest
Firstly I can say that I saw no increase in the accuracy of my GPS. still
registering an accuracy of approx 18m which is quite
normal.
Secondly I had failed to previously mention observation point as a good place
to see Pacific Gulls. This time there were 94 birds
in close proximity. Approximately 20 % immatures and about 20% intermediate
immature/adult plumages.
Still good numbers of Red Knot and Bar-tailed Godwit although they were sitting
on a small offshore rock island and I couldn't get
accurate counts. Some almost full breeding plumage Red Knot, Curlew Sandpiper
and Red-necked Stints. Also I was surprised to see
30 Whimbrel which is the most I have ever seen at Observation point. Saw a
Collared sparrowhawk fly over the waders and they all
went up. Why would a collared sparrowhawk frighten Whimbrel, Bar-tailed Godwit
and Eastern Curlew??
All the birds on the point in no particular order

collared Sparrowhawk 1
Black Swan 36
