During May we will be spending 10-12 days in this area, our first birding
holiday with our little boy who will be 9 months.
We have already booked in for 5 days at "Yeranda" near Dungog.
Could anyone please help help me out with:
1. Good birding spots in these areas (2WD vehicle). (I have picked some reports
from David Geering and Edwin Vella off birdingaus)
2. Recommending a place to stay around Kandos/Capertee, ideally a self
contained cottage in a bush setting.
I can recommend a visit to Lake Wollomboola near Nowra, NSW at the moment, with
over 10 000 water birds, predominantly Swans, Teal and Silver Gull. Amongst the
39 species we saw on the weekend were Double Banded Plover, Golden Plover
moulting into breeding plumage, some 100% breeding plumage male Bar Tailed
Godwits, over 100 White Fronted Chats, 50 Black Winged Stilt and 20 Caspian
Tern. Also a Peregrine almost catching a Red Necked Stint.
We can also offer anyone advice on travelling around Oz, having completed such
a trip in 1997/98. Not knowing anything about birds at the beginning, but with
enough sense to take along a pair of bins and a field guide, we were hooked by
the end of our trip.
The only problem being at the start of our trip we travelled through Cape York
and through the habitats of all the grass wrens without making any effort to
look for the Cape York specialties or the grasswrens - a missed opportunity,
but a great reason to go back.
Broome Bird Observatory was the best place we stayed, closely follwed by
Kingfisher Park.
Any help on the above would be greatly appreciated.
