Jack Krohn asks about Magpie Goose introductions in Victoria.
The Atlas of Victorian Wildlife and Wetlands Database provide the following
details.
The first recorded database observation of MG at Tower Hill is 1974 and
1988 at Serendip. MG have bred at both sites and have been free to come
and go. Tower Hill is now the most regularly reported site for the Species
in the state. There have been attempts by the species to breed close to
Melbourne. In 1993 a pair nested at Ryans Swamp near the Western
Treatment Plant. However the attempt failed due to an unknown (but
probably a fox) predator.
As far as I am aware the Department of Natural Resources and Environment is
not currently undertaking any breeding of geese in Victoria. Some fauna
parks, however, have had some success. Kyabram Fauna Park west of
Shepparton managed to raise some goslings in 1988. The species was of
course introduced to this site.
