Roger,
To add to Penny's comments I did a day trip to Tiri in December 1997.
You can book through one of the ferry operators in Auckland Harbour.
I think it runs twice a week. Absolutely the best way to see many of
NZ's interesting birds. Easy views of Takahe (my all-time
favourite!), Brown Teal, Stichbird, Saddleback, etc.
Indicate you are a birder to one of the guides and you will be given
special treatment.
For Kiwi a night stop-over would be necessary. I think this can be
arranged. Suggest you contact the relevant tourism authority.
Unfortunately I have loaned my brochure/info on Tiri to someone who
has yet to return it!
Have a great trip.
