:Whilst on a birding trip on Cape York Peninsula {October 98} a friend
:videotaped an incident which showed his discovery of a small hole {abt 3 or
:4cms wide)in a tree trunk from which a threatening growl would come if the
:trunk was scratched or the hole entrance touched with a small stick
:He found two of these holes from which this loud growl could be provoked,
:the first about 2m up the trunk of a small tree , the second nearby in a
:different tree about !/2m above ground level. The ominous and quite loud
:growls could be stimulated by movement close to the site of the hole in
:each case.
:The sound emitted is rather intimidating and normally would be expected
:from a creature too large for such small apertures..
:The actual site of is within rain forest on the Claudie River in Iron Range
:Can anyone throw any light on the possible source of these strange sounds ?
:Not a birding question but one of those intriguing consequences of our

how about the tree gecko Psuedothecadactylis australis? they can be found as
they growl when you walk past their tree hollow.
