To All

I have just read a reply from Alan Morris (NSWFOC) about birds in the
Blue Mts. I would like to make two comments about his reply:

        a) firstly the need for competent observers in the field and for all
unusual sightings to be followed up. ( The Toowoomba Bird Observers do
not add a new bird to their local list unless it has been sighted by two
members and then a unusual sightings form completed and forwarded to the
records officer for recognition. I was records officer in 1995-96)

        b) the second, a more contentious note, is the fact that a lot of
birdo's discount unusual sightings as "Aviary-escapees" and not
authentic sightings of wild birds. How would you explain an Inland
Dotterel on the Beach at Bundaberg, in the mid 90's seen by Rod Simpson
from Victoria, if my memory serves me correctly. Definitely not an
Aviary escapee!!! Having been in Aviculture for nearly 25 years,
Bowerbirds of any kind are not very common in private collections of
birds, definitely not as common as parrots, finches or to a lesser
extent, smaller soft-bills.

I suggest that we all check the sighting records before we dismiss,
offhand, an unusual sighting. It may just turn out to be an extension
of range, maybe!!!!
