Nigel - I'm sorry if I didnt express myself clearly. Blackberries area
hellish pest and should be exterminated. but if they are the last cover
left in park or paddock, they should not be eliminated *until* there is
some alternative, pref. indigenous, cover established!
  Moreover blackberries are never finally eliminated. Follow up work
with handtools is essential to get every seedling and every sprouting
bit of root for many years..otherwise they will be swamping new
plantings in no time.
  
Apologies for not succeeding in snipping original in last two replies i
sent. They sprang back like the brambles, so I cant have done it
correctly.
