This has been demonstrated to be a problem with Satin Bowerbirds collecting
blue rings.  I doubt other birds are really that interested.  Cutting them
might make a difference if you have Satin Bowerbirds around.  If you don't
have bowerbirds then I don't think you need worry unduly.  A different
colour would also do the same trick, as long as it didn't become attractive
to another species of bowerbird.

There are other issues concerning the use of plastics but I'd rather stick
to the bird issue.
