Further to Philip Hansbro's message in which he suggests Grimmett et al;
and Kazmierczak and Singh as good references, here are a few more
possibilities. They are at various levels of detail, and price, but could
be of use. All the authors are well known in their field.
Grewal, B. (1995). A Photographic Guide to Birds of India and Nepal. New
Holland: London. Photos with species description, and broad distribution
maps. Is one of a series of (almost) pocket-sized Photographic Guides that
include parts of South-east Asia, and Australia. I bought it in Jakarta.
Grewal, B., Sunjoy Monga and Wright, G. (1993). Birds of India, Bangladesh,
Nepal, Pakistan and Shri Lanka: a photographic guide. Guidebook Co.: Hong
Kong. Photos: no illustration for some species. Discusses food, voice,
range and habitat. No distribution maps. Was $30 from Andrew Isles
Bkshop.
Woodcock, M. (1995). Collins Birds of India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh
and Sri Lanka. HarperCollins: London. Drawings with limited species
discussion. No distribution maps. Probably intended more for the hobby
birder, with limited detail. Martin Woodcock was the illustrator for King,
et al - Birds of South-east Asia Field Guide..... From Andrew Isles Bkshop.

Two hard covers include:
Ali, S. (1996). The Book of Indian Birds. Bombay Natural Hist. Soc.
Oxford Univ. Press: Oxford. Plates pages with separate species description
that includes size comparison, field characters distribution, habits, food,
call, nesting, etc.
Was $55 from Andrew Isles Bkshop April 1997.
Ali, S and Ripley, S.D. (1995). A Pictorial Guide to the Birds of the
Indian Subcontinent. Bombay Nat. Hist. Soc. Oxford Univ. Press: Oxford.
Plates pages with brief species description opposite; and systematic index
of families and species at front of book with very general Family
descriptions. Was $80 from Andrew Isles Bkshop in April 1997.
