Martin, 

Were there any extremes in temperature, rainfall, wind etc? Another possiblity 
is viral, haematozoic infection. Did the parents maintain parental care whilst 
keeping predators away, or did they neglect the ducklings in a way that was 
terminal?

As a firm believer of the only good cat is a very dead one I suggest that you 
leave the cat in the pool for a few weeks and see if the same abiotic/biotic 
factors affect the cat similiarly! I am joking of course.
