Somewhat embarrassed to discover that Ian Clayton's email on the 107
species seen on New Year's day had been sent privately and not to the list;
so I apologise to him in advance. Incidentally, on 2 January Ian, Marleen
Acton and I found a shearwater at the Townsville Port, which we believe to
be a Short-tailed Shearwater. Had the camera with me so hope the slides
will confirm this.

Re: David Attenborough's Life of Birds; a week ago I was stopped in the
street by a couple of non-birders who asked: "Did you see that segment on
TV last night?" I doubt that they realised the program was part of a
series, or that David Attenborough was the presenter, but the program
caught their imagination and they wanted to share it with someone they knew
to be a birder. Their interest was mainly in the amazing photography rather
than birds going about their business, and I am hoping the final program
will reveal some of the secrets behind the amazing shots.

I think wildlife programs on TV have a general rather than limited appeal,
possibly equalling that of sport and 'lifestyle' programs, otherwise the
producers wouldn't keep churning them out!
