I bought a copy of the Java/Bali book in Yogyakarta in Jawa Tengah (Central
Java) about 18 months ago, and I believe it's still in print (until the
MacKinnon & Phillipps guide is translated into Bahasa Indonesia, and sold at
a locally affordable price, the old MacKinnon book is the only local
language guide for Java/Bali). There's an excellent bookshop (name????) in
the northern part of the central city area, which stocks mostly Indonesian
books, but some English language too. This book is available in both
Indonesian and English, and the English version includes Javanese bird
names. It was for that reason I bought it, and as a momento of my trip,
because the plates are quite awful! MacKinnon worked with a new artist,
Karen Phillipps, to produce the expanded and updated guide that Ron
Orenstein mentioned - a far superior field guide - which includes all the
Greater Sundas (Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Bali), and comes in handy in Sundaic
Peninsula Malaysia too.

Cheers, Lawrie
