We have been getting quite a few enquiries about when the next volume
(No.4) of the Handbook of Australian, New Zealand and Antarctic Birds
(HANZAB) will be published. Vol.4 will cover all the remaining
non-passerine species (parrots/cockatoos, kingfishers/kookaburras, owls,
nightjars, frogmouths, swifts, bee-eaters, rollers). There have been some
delays, but publication now seems on track for February 1999.
HANZAB is not a profit-making venture. An enormous amount of work goes
into exhaustive literature searches and the meticulous checking of details
to make the final accounts as comprehensive and as authoritative as
possible. Funding is always tight, and comes from a variety of sources,
including individuals who sponsor species accounts. For anybody who is
interested, there are still several Volume 4 species which languish
unloved, waiting for suitors to link their names with. These are (as of
