Hi all!
I have been following the discussion on land clearing with interest. My own
situation is that I have a 20ha block - mostly forested - in an area of high
conservation significance (has Sooty Owl and Spotted-tailed Quoll, and is
adjacent to Barren Grounds Nature Reserve). I have had it gazetted as a
'Wildlife Refuge" and rigidly exclude all grazing stock and domestic
animals. On this I pay full residential rates. My neighbours, with the
same-sized blocks, run a few cattle and pay rates little more than half as
much as I do - with the cattle sometimes being allowed to roam through the
forest as well as the pasture. We have an environmentally-minded Council
(relatively) but they seem unable to do anything. Is this situation the same
throughout our great nation? Somewhat less relevantly, another of my
neighbours is a large residential religious group - and they pay no rates at
all!
