Thanks to all of you who told me about the Wingspan article by Carter
and Eades (The Commic Terns... Wingspan 16, Dec 1994). It is very
helpful so I'm just waiting for the next spell of high pressure to see
what terns up.

There must be good conditions in the Bay for seabirds at present. For
Bayside, as well as the variety and number of terns (6 fairy terns was
the highest number for a decade or so), there was (on 19/6/98)an early
flock of 150+ fluttering shearwaters (not recorded at all in my area
since October 1994).
