I believe the British Trust for Ornithology manages with just 2-letter
codes (eg. GO = goldfinch, SG for common starling), with some birds
having just one-letter codes (eg. S = skylark).  There are also some
rather contrived ones with "Z" being used where there would otherwise be
a clash of some sort.

Surely we, despite having a few more birds on the local list than the
Poms, could manage with 3 letters.
