Whipbirds calling

I ran into a situation where I needed to know how many Whipbirds were present.

What is the latest wisdom on the view that the female responds at the end
of the male whipcrack? I have heard more and more people dispute this
belief in the past year. Does the two note choo-choo call at the end of the
crack indicate the female is definitely present, or is it so that the male
sometimes does it himself?

I would appreciate a brief response from anyone in the know.

Cheers,

Jill Dening
