Several things.
The configuration of birding-aus could be changed so that only subscribers
can contribute. Whaddya say, Russell?
If your e-mail reader has filtering, set up some filters so messages that
are not directly addressed to you and contain phrases like "Dear friend"
are cast into the electronic dustbin.
Spammers often use forged e-mail addresses, but the headers will tell you
where they really came from. In Eudora, you can click on the "Blah Blah
Blah" button to see all the headers for an e-mail message. Many other
e-mail packages have a similar function.
If you can work out where the message really came from, tell their upstream
site, the link between the spammer and the Internet. They usually are glad
to know their facilities have been clogged by a spammer, and frequently cut
them off from the 'Net altogether.
