Highlights from twice-weekly Canberra Ornithologists' Group (COG) hotline,
for week and a half ending 7 April (some reports are of earlier obs).
Now over 2 months since rain; today is over 30o, which is 11o above expected.
The evidence is that the major Yellow-faced HE exodus has peaked (at least 3
weeks early) and we are moving into '2nd phase', with the White-napeds
starting to move too.
WHITE-BROWED WOODSWALLOWS 21/3 Shannons Flat (just south of ACT)
RUFOUS FANTAILS 29/3 3 in Botanic Gardens (passage migrants)
HOBBY TAKING BAT IN THE AIR 4/4, suburban Ainslie, early evening
SPINE-TAILED SWIFTS (W-T NTS...) 3/4 Highway south of Canberra
[paradoxically, a month after we'd normally expect to see them!]
BELL MINERS 6/4 Scupture garden, National GAllery [this is NOT a
local species, though a small colony existed for a while near the
Gov-GEneral's place a year or so back; presumably the movement orginated
with fire or drought]
