Hi all
I am surprised that Neville's topo sheets are marked in 2 minute grids. Wonder
who publishes them? Neville's topo maps are obviously different from those in
the ACT and NSW. Both our 1:100,000 and 1:25,000 maps published by the NSW
Central Mapping Authority and the Commonwealth's AUSLIG use diverse methods of
indicating latitude and longitude, but none uses 2 minute markings. Five minutes
is most common.
The 2.5 minute grid used by the Canberra Ornithologists Group works well, in
this decimal era. It fits all the Cwlth and NSW Govt topo maps I have used. It
is also a useful search area for observers on foot, about 3.5 km by 4.5 km in
the Canberra region. I have not seen any argument to suggest anything better
than 2.5 minute grids, except in the far inland where something larger (as was
used in the previous atlas) is probably appropriate.
Also .. we need a debate on recording simply presence/absence vs abundance. I
was surprised to hear, recently, that presence/absence was being seriously
considered. Hasn't the experience with the Australian Bird Count demonstrated
the huge advantage of assessing abundance?
